Release tension in your neck

As we are approaching Christmas, after what has been a turbulent year for us all, I am noticing so many people with a real need for some TLC. And so I’d like to gift to you a video to help you release tension around your neck and shoulders, to help you to relax, rejuvenate and renew a sense of ease and calm.

Your neck holds such a lot of emotional and physical tension. This Gentle Somatic Yoga video will enable you to identify and dissolve built up tension and discomfort as you move through a sequence of Somatic Movement flows, including my Foot Slider exercise. It seems strange that an exercise moving the feet would have a significant impact on the health of your neck but in fact, it does! If you like to know more then do read on. If you’d rather just get stuck in to some juicy, soothing movement then scroll straight down to the video below.

Fascia

The fascia in your body is a connective fibrous tissue that connects all the muscles, organs and structures of your whole body. It is not only useful as a physically connective tissue but also a part of the communication between different parts of your body. And due to the way that your fascia is a continuous piece of webbing that surrounds your muscles and organs, the build-up of tension in one spot can have a significant impact on other areas of the body - much like if you pull a thread in a wool jumper, you will find the pull affecting the pattern along that whole line of weaving. This web is in “sections”, one of which runs from your heals all the way up the back of your body, upper back, back of your neck and around your skull to you forehead. By mobilising your feet, you are able encourage fluid mobility through this section of fascia, bringing about a smoother ease of motion and releasing bunch-up tension in the fascia around your upper back and around your neck and also around the base of the skull and around your head. So by doing the rhythmic movements in my Foot Slider exercise, you will find you are able to notice a difference in the comfort and ease of movement in your neck.

Alignment

If your feet are unbalanced or miss-aligned, this will have a significant impact on the rest of your gait and body alignment. Misaligned feet will affect where weight is distributed through your ankles, knees, hips, spine and up into your neck. As your neck is the most flexible, moveable joint in this sequence, that is the place that will end up being uncomfortable or painful. By doing the Foot Slider exercise in this video, you will have the opportunity to build your articulation and mobility in the many joints in your feet. By improving the strength and mobility of your feet, you will feel a direct relational ease of tension through your neck.

Reflexology and Meridians

You may be aware that your feet are an ideal way to relate to the rest of your body through Reflexology and Chinese Medicine techniques. Your big toe and the base of your big toe relate directly to your neck and head. So by mobilising these parts of your feet you can release blocked energy, activating release of tension through your neck and head.
